The March in March: California 2025 pushback against higher ed cuts

From Geoff Johnson, Part-time Faculty Rep California Community College Council (CFT) and CTA/CCA Part-time Faculty Issues Committee Chair

For those outside California, know that the pushback on cuts to higher ed is happening. A mass rally and march, the March in March, will be taking place on March 4th, 2025 in Sacramento. The march will be going directly in front of CA Legislative offices and the rally will be at the capitol. Sponsors of the event include CFT, UC-AFT and CTA/CCA, the Student Senate for California Community Colleges, along with various local labor federations, and high education advocacy Groups. CFA, representing the CSUs, has been invited to join.

Earlier iterations of the March from 2009-2014 helped create the momentum for the passage of Prop 30, or the so-called “Millionaire’s Tax in 2014, and its subsequent extension to 2030 with Prop 55 in 2016.

The broad demands of the 2025 March in March are as follows:

  • No cuts to education, support wrap-around student services
  • Respect and dignity for higher education
  • Fair pay and working conditions for all campus workers
  • One Job should be enough–Fight for the future of higher education and California labor

Here is a short promotional video showing last year’s March in March.
