August 2025 HELU Chair’s Message: What would your campus look like in a world where higher ed institutions actually work for all working people?

Levin Kim, Chair, HELU and member, UAW 4121

Staff, faculty, university healthcare workers, facilities & maintenance workers, research workers, academic advisors – we carry out the crucial everyday work that keeps our campuses running. It’s time we had a say in shaping the future of our sector in order to build a world that actually works for working people.

Higher ed workers are engaging in ambitious contract campaigns, taking political action, building strong unions, strengthening coalitions, and more. With each action, campaign, and organizing drive, workers are winning concrete improvements on campuses from coast to coast. More importantly – with each fight, we empower our mass movement built by workers with experiences of taking on meaningful fights together. Our jobs, our communities, our campuses are at stake.

HELU brings together local unions and labor organizations and provides many points of access where you can join and participate. For example, on Monday the 18th of August, HELU will host higher ed workers and activists learning how to fight back the Big Bad Bill’s impacts on higher education with Sara Garcia, policy analyst for Senator Bernie Sanders on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee (HELP) and Thomas Gokey, policy director of the Debt Collective. If you are reading this after that event, check out the Upcoming Events section below (or on HELU’s website), where upcoming events are posted and you can register to attend.

This is only the beginning. We sit at the intersection of labor and the higher education industry. This is where the power is. Join fellow higher ed workers building a wall-to-wall, coast-to-coast higher ed labor movement.

Stay tuned for more.
