October 29 – Skeleton Crews at Academic Medical Centers: The Dangerous Results of Bare-Bones Funding

At a time when jobs, security, our hospitals, and the health of the American People are put in danger, labor stepped in and has led campaigns to save government-funded health programs and safeguard the interests of patients and workers. Join HELU organizers on Zoom on Wednesday, October 29 at 7:30 PM ET / 6:30 CT / 5:30 MT / 4:30 PT to think through the current situation while we plan to fight back and push for a healthcare system that works for all.

While Healthcare has become the second-largest employer in the United States, the federal government has moved to defund most of the tax-funded programs that cover up to 40% of our population. At a time when jobs, security, our hospitals, and the health of the American People are put in danger, labor has stepped in and led a number of campaigns to save these programs and safeguard the interests of patients and workers.

Approximately 20% of all Healthcare workers work in institutions related to Higher Education. These institutions employ thousands of people and take care of millions more, also fulfilling a key role by training healthcare professionals. These terrible cuts will have serious effects on both labor provisions and protections, and austerity will worsen working conditions and staff shortages already in place, ultimately causing a decrease in the quality and access to care received by our patients. Join HELU organizers to think through this and other threats while we plan to fight back and push for a healthcare system that works for all.
