Demand Real Protections for All Brown University Grad Workers

From our colleagues at GLO-Brown:

Mansi Kumar is a first year PhD student in Biomedical Engineering. She received formal approval for medical time off to recover from a concussion which could exacerbate her retinal degeneration. When she returned, her advisor placed her on academic probation and justified it by stating in an email that Mansi had “spent one third of [her] time in my lab healing.”

Brown approved her medical leave and then punished her for taking it.

When Mansi tried to leave her toxic lab, her advisor retaliated by sending disparaging emails to other faculty members. When she filed a formal complaint with Brown’s Graduate Grievance Committee, they presented her with an NDA threatening expulsion or suspension if she spoke about her case.

  • Recognize graduate Fellows as members of GLO, consistent with Rhode Island Law and the 75% of fellows who have signed authorization cards; and
  • Withdraw its position at the bargaining table that harassment and discrimination should not be grievable offenses under the union contract.
