This particular discussion group is only open to HELU Delegates as a way to get Delegates more deeply engaged. Delegates are the power base that makes HELU different from any of our component local labor unions or organizations. The potential of that power base is also what makes HELU worth having as a core partner of the various coalitions we are part of. Our ability to undertake actions on a national level depends on the engagement of our Delegates.

Within HELU, Delegates have a powerful role. They have a vote at General Assemblies and on committees and can run in elections to be part of HELU’s Steering Committee. They are accountable to their local organization’s leadership. They are HELU’s connection to the members of our member organizations.

In order to act this role effectively, Delegates need to be aware of the projects and policies that the HELU leadership is carrying out in their name. They need to be equipped to discuss and debate them and communicate those projects and policies to their own organization’s membership. Delegates must also be equipped and empowered to bring their members’ feedback back to HELU.

Hopefully, a lively discussion about the role of Delegates and HELU’s projects will ensue at the April 21 QODD. We intend to make these quarterly events. It will be only lightly facilitated; where the conversation goes will be up to you. We are going to cap this meeting at 25 participants, to make it possible for people to speak more than once and meet and remember each other.
