HELU Founding Convention

May 17-19, 2024

Voting & Elections

Details on Voting & Elections

Most of Saturday, May 18 will be dedicated to internal HELU business. These sessions will be hybrid and available only to official member organization delegates and individual members. In-person breakfast will begin at 9am ET. Saturday’s member & delegate-only hybrid sessions will begin at 11am ET/10am CT/9am MT/8am PT. Throughout the day, delegates will discuss the following documents and take up-or-down votes:

  • Governing documents, including the Constitution & Bylaws and Vision Statement.
    • Please note: Points from discussion and debates on the floor will be tabled to a Constitutional Review Committee that will meet to review/revise HELU’s governing documents after the Convention. Delegates from member unions will be encouraged to participate in this Committee work.
  • Committee Priorities: Committee reports and resolutions will set forth organizational priorities and policy in key areas. Delegates should review these committee reports and resolutions, both in preparation for a vote to affirm the resolutions and to consider where member union delegates would most like to plug into HELU committee work.

HELU leadership elections will take place Saturday at 2pm ET/1pm CT/Noon MT/11am PT. All HELU Officer and Steering Committee roles are up for election. Several positions are contested. View the full slate of candidates and their statements online here.

  • Please note:
    • We do not have anyone running as Steering Committee representatives from Service and Maintenance Staff or Non-Collective Bargaining Jurisdiction Organizations. We will be looking to fill these positions soon.
    • Votes will all be done online via ElectionBuddy, so we ask that all delegates, including those attending in-person, bring a wifi-enabled device to participate.

Information on positions up for election at the 2024 HELU Founding Convention

At the Founding Convention on May 17-19, the HELU General Assembly will elect a Steering Committee composed of three HELU Officers and eleven seats designated to represent the diversity of higher education workers.  All positions are elected to two-year terms.  To be eligible, individuals must be official delegates from a member union or organization.  The individual elected to each steering committee seat must, themselves, work in that type of position (i.e., it is not sufficient to be a member of a union who represents workers in that job category).

HELU will have three officers: Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary Treasurer.  The officers shall have the power to govern HELU between Steering Committee meetings, set campaign priorities, develop the annual budget of HELU with the Steering Committee and designated staff, and recommend the annual budget for final approval of the General Assembly.

Additionally, the Chair shall preside at meetings of the Steering Committee and General Assembly, co-sign all checks of HELU, and carry out such other functions as may be assigned by the General Assembly or Steering Committee.

The Vice Chair shall assist the Chair, carry out the duties of the Chair in their absence, carry out such other functions as may be assigned by the Steering Committee, and be an alternate signatory of the Chair or Secretary-Treasurer on all checks.

The Secretary-Treasurer shall be responsible for maintaining HELU’s funds, books, records and accounts, co-sign all checks of HELU with the President, and provide financial reports to the Steering Committee and General Assembly. The Secretary-Treasurer shall also keep minutes or other records of all meetings of the Steering Committee and shall be empowered to certify as to such proceedings. The Secretary-Treasurer will attend to the giving and serving of all notices of HELU and shall have charge of such books and papers as the Steering Committee may direct, shall attend to such correspondence as may be assigned, and perform all the duties incidental to the office.

The Steering Committee will be comprised of delegates elected to fill the following eleven seats:
